RTX 2080 Super salvation
Mar 04, 2024
I recently got my hands on an Asus RTX 2080S Evo V2 that kept crashing under load. Basically 9/10 times it would crash in some seconds of benchmarking or gaming. Also the card takes like 5-10 times to post and then posts fine for sometime before entering hard lock again with fans 100% and no post. When the card works, it works flawlessly, clear picture, good fps and no crashes, but as soon as anything is 3D it crashes. Also manages to fully bypass 2D benchmarking and watching/streaming videos without issues.
Undervolting and -clocking seemed not to make a difference. BIOS flashed, no effect. DDU and driver reinstall, also no effect. PCB looks fine to me, not bent and no signs of burn damage or corrosion.
Thermal paste and pads changed, temps stay below 65 even under load (when the card is working) so overheating shouldn't be the issue.
Gputest passed repeatedly with no errors but mats shows 64 write errors on all hi channel VRAM chips (fbioa-d1), no other errors.
Testing rig:
Xeon E5-1650v4
HP z440 c612 mobo
32 GB ddr4 ECC
Seasonic Focus Platinum 750W
Could this be some sort of a PWM controller issue or any other ideas where to start looking? Easy fix or time to announce death and beyond repair?
